Season 2 – Week #22: An Empty Room with Kara Golemba – “Puzzle”

After spending the month of January in the studio working on his forth coming 2016 release, the laureate of the lonesome tune, Zachary Lucky will be performing a handful of shows around the Canadian midwest, all throughout Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

This will be an intimate night of song featuring Ian Cameron on the pedal steel guitar and Mitchell Thomson on the upright bass.

ZACHARY LUCKY truly is the bread and butter of the massive Canadian Folk scene.  With an emphasis on songwriting and an ear for delicate arrangements, Lucky’s songs will haunt you and remind you of what Country and Western music was originally conceived as.

Week #24: An Empty Room with Blake Berglund – “Me + Trav”

It’s been five months since we launched our Empty Room series on May 18th.  Twelve artists and 23 videos later, today we release the 24th and final video in the series – Blake Berglund’s performance of “Me + Trav”!  Blake and his band (including Bryce Lewis who plays bass in the video) will be playing at the Canadian Wester Agribition on Friday, November 27 for their Friday night cabaret presented by The Regina Folk Festival.  Berglund will also be releasing the live b-side of “Me + Trav” from his Jasper Legion Session on Friday, November 13 via Bandcamp.  For more information go to www.blakeberglund.com.

Week #19: An Empty Room with Belle Plaine & Blake Berglund – “Taxes + Death + You”

Belle Plaine and Blake Berglund join voices again this week for their second Empty Room video, a performance of “Taxes + Death + You”!   The pair have been on a Western Canadian tour together this September, which will be coming to an end on September 27 with a show at the Artesian in Regina.  The Artesian show will also feature fellow Saskatchewan songwriter Zachary Lucky to whom their collaborative double-single 7” vinyl record (released September 4) pays homage.  For more information, check out their websites: www.belleplainemusic.com  www.blakeberglund.com.

Conor GainsThis summer got off to a tremendous start for the Conor Gains Band, as they won the 2014 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search, set off on an Eastern Canadian tour and released their new CD “Run Away With The Night” — all in the span of three days!

Whether you crave blues, rock, folk, roots or country, well, it can certainly be found in the diverse sounds showcased on “Run Away With The Night.” All eleven tracks on the new album were written or co-written by Conor Gains, now 21, and show incredible musicianship, not to mention versatility. From an early age, Gains, of Cambridge, Ontario, learned to be comfortable on the big stage playing as a guest of the B.B. King All Stars in Nashville and Memphis at age 14 and then with the late legendary Les Paul in New York’s Iridium Jazz Club (age 15). Shortly afterwards he began writing his own material. [Read more…]
